Membership FAQs:
Frequently Asked Questions from Prospective Members
- What makes ΦΒΣ better than other fraternities?
Of course, this is a subjective question with numerous answers. Every member you ask will have a different answer for you. However, most answers will share a common strand. Members will tell you that ΦΒΣ is truly about its ideals and motto. They will tell you that ΦΒΣ is truly devoted to the "inclusive we" rather than the "exclusive we." They will tell you that, even before they joined the fraternity, they saw brothers out in the community making a difference, doing things - getting things done. They will tell you that ΦΒΣ is a true, universal brotherhood. But don't take my word for it . . .
- What benefits does ΦΒΣ offer its members?
ΦΒΣ offers a lifelong brotherhood whose members cover the country and the world. It allows members to serve humanity with a huge force behind them of like-minded individuals devoted to service. This brotherhood also comes into play as a background of support as you progress through your college years. Brothers of ΦΒΣ are devoted to scholarship, and, as a member of this collegiate organization, you have a network of support and accountability for your academic pursuits. ΦΒΣ also offers its members social benefits. Brothers not only make sure your grades stay up and help you with your service projects, but they throw great parties and are always there to talk.
- What kind of relationship do members of ΦΒΣ have with their sisters of ΖΦΒ?
It is the policy of ΦΒΣ Fraternity, Inc. to promote a spirit of cooperation at all levels with ΖΦΒ Sorority, Inc. Members of ΒΒΘ have a good relationship with our sisters in ΣΠ. We also strive to have a pleasant relationship with the members of ΑΚΑ and ΔΣΘ who share our campus.
- What should I do to prepare myself for the membership intake process?
First, make sure you have a good G.P.A. The University requires a 2.5, but we appreciate the extra effort of a 3.0. Next, there are financial responsibilities of which you will become aware. Finally, you should get to know the brothers on this campus.
- How should I go about expressing my interest in ΦΒΣ?
The most productive way to express interest is to talk to a current member of ΒΒΘ. Then, that brother can tell you what else you need to do. He can also answer any other questions you might have. There is a list of members on this website, as well as email addresses. If all else fails, just look for the letters, ΦΒΣ, on a shirt, jacket, or other apparel. Other less productive ways to go about expressing interest in Sigma-dom could include going around campus and telling everyone except brothers, telling brothers from other chapters, or start wearing the letters.
- How can I learn more?
Read this website. It has a lot of valuable information. Go to the library or a bookstore and check out The Divine Nine - a book that covers the histories of all the nine member organizations of the NPHC (ΑΦΑ, ΚΑΨ, ΩΨΦ, ΦΒΣ, ΙΦΘ, ΑΚΑ, ΔΣΘ, ΖΦΒ, and ΣΓΡ). However, your most valueable resources are conversations with brothers. You should get in contact with any of the brothers on campus or members of nearby graduate chapters. They will tell you everything you want to know. They can also be valuable resources throughout your process, as well as later on once you are a member.
