ΦΒΣ - The Fraternity of Firsts
- First to have Presidents of other countries in its membership. (William Tolbert - Past President of Liberia; Nnamdi Azikiwe - Past President of Nigeria; Kwame Nkurumah - Past President of Ghana)
- First First Greek Letter Fraternity to be recognized by Howard University (April 5, 1914). Omega Psi Phi was not recognized until October 28 1914.
- First to hold a joint international convention with another African American Fraternity (Omega Psi Phi).
- First to establish a youth auxiliary program, Sigma Beta Club (1950 - Sigma Beta Club).
- First to establish a constitutional bond with a sorority, ZETA PHI BETA SOROITY, INC.
- First to own and operate a credit union for its members.
- First to establish chapters on the continent of AFRICA.
- First Greek Letter Organization to step with canes. (NOT ΚΑΨ)
- First to establish a chapter south of the state of Virginia before the year of 1915.
- First and ONLY Black Greek-Letter Organization to have one of its members on the face of a U.S. Coin. (Bro. George Washington

- ΦΒΣ was the ONLY African American fraternity to officially support and help organize the historic Million Man March in 1995.
